Discovering Life, Learning and Leadership

Do you have a vision and plan for your life?  I didn’t always, but I do.

I enjoy planning and have learnt from some great authors and mentors that it is important to have a clear direction.  Joel Barker said (I love this quote and use it often):

“Vision without action is merely a dream.

Action without vision just passes the time.

Vision with action can change the world.”

When I started setting personal goals back in 1981, I made the mistake of making them too detailed and didn’t review or navigate against them frequently enough.  By the mid 90’s I learned to keep my planning focused and crisp and to review my progress on a regular basis.

In the business and organizational context, I have found Rick Knowlan of Knowlan Consulting Group Inc., to be most helpful when creating vision and strategy.

From a personal perspective, I adapted the general concepts from Rick’s approach and combined them with learnings from Rick Warren, Steven Covey and others.  My Life Vision has five components, I have five Core Strategies (partially modelled after Rick Warren’s great book “The Purpose Driven Life”) and annually I typically set one or two Personal Objectives for each Core Strategy.  I keep my Life Vision to one page and typically my Core Strategies, Personal Objectives and my navigation tracking is less than two pages long.

Given that my personal relationship with Jesus Christ is most important in my life, my vision and strategy has significant faith-based spiritual content.  If you are interested, here is my Life Vision:

Life Verses

Colossians 3:17, 23-24

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.  Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
