Discovering Life, Learning and Leadership

“Get a good education, it’s easy to carry with you,” my father would often say as I was growing up. He was correct so I took his advice and, years later, my lovely wife Judy and I started sharing similar advice with our children.

This past week, Judy and I attended three British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) Convocations and three BCIT Graduating Awards Ceremonies as all three of our children graduated and received awards. We are so thankful for our children and consider ourselves very blessed.

Building on her Bachelor of Science Honours in Biophysics degree, which she completed at the University of British Columbia (UBC) a couple of years ago, on Wednesday our daughter Brittany graduated from BCIT, with distinction, receiving her Diploma of Technology in Prosthetics and Orthotics.

That evening at the Graduating Awards Ceremony for the School of Health Sciences, Brittany received an Academic Award (presented to students with the highest average grades in the final year of their program). Well done Brittany! All your hard work has been worth it and we are very proud of you.

On Thursday, our son Matthew graduated, with distinction, receiving his Diploma of Technology in Financial Management, Corporate Finance Option. 32 years ago (wow, that sounds like a long time ago; I must have been very young), I graduated with a similar Diploma of Technology in Financial Management, Finance Option, from BCIT.

Later that evening, we attended the School of Business Graduating Awards Ceremony where Matthew was honoured with an Achievement Award (presented to students who received outstanding marks in specific courses or to those who have demonstrated a combination of high academic standing, leadership, service and/or all around achievement). You did amazing Matthew and we are very proud of you!

Having received a Diploma of Technology, with distinction, in Computer Information Technologies from BCIT two years ago, on Friday, our son Nathan graduated, with distinction, receiving his Bachelor of Technology in Computer Systems degree.

Over the three days and six BCIT events, Judy and I clapped our fingers off, not only for our family but also for the hundreds of other graduates we watched cross the stage and for the other award winners. Getting a great education is a significant achievement and we wanted to encourage all the graduates.

We also heard many speeches including three keynote speakers and three valedictory addresses. Among other things, we were reminded of the importance of lifelong learning (please see my earlier post on Lifelong Learning and BCIT Awards) and of using one’s education both as a launching pad for a career and as an enabler to make a difference in the lives of people, especially those in need.

As parents, we are particularly thankful that Brittany, Nathan and Matthew continue to help people in need, both in our community as well as through various mission’s trips around the world.

What are your thoughts on the importance of getting a good education?  Are you a student or do you have children taking post-secondary education?  I welcome your comments.

Arthur — Congratulations to you and Judy — and to your kids, too, of course — for a great week of academic achievement. Obviously, the kids had great examples in their parents and had the capacity to absorb all the parental wisdom and guidance that came their way. Best Regards,

Congratulations to you and your family. I think every parents dream is to have successful children. You are lucky to have children like them and they are lucky to have parents like you to support them. I wish every kid around the world to have opportunity like our kid has here in Canada.
