Discovering Life, Learning and Leadership

Recently I came across this great Tweet by Terry Small:

If ever there was a time to be a committed, curious lifelong learner – this is it.

I agree! It is important to be committed to learning throughout your life and curiosity is a great gift.  Terry Small is the “Brainguy” and is an international speaker, author of the Brain Bulletin, motivator and someone who loves to learn and teach about the brain.  I’ve known Terry for years and am impressed by a lot of his thinking (www.terrysmall.com).

Personally, I love to learn.  While I enjoy the sheer process of learning, even more, I enjoy learning something that I can use to help others.

At Creation Technologies, we encourage Lifelong Learning and many of our people are active learners.  It is a key part of our culture.  Below is a great example.

Blue Belt Graduates from back-to-front and left-to-right: Greg Liewald, Jason Hahn, John Dwyer, Renata Kalandyk, Chanah Kim, Valentina Voloshina, John Zbroszczyk, Negede Berhanu, Matt Mulqueen

I am delighted to announce the completion of our first Lean Six Sigma Blue Belt training.  Nine people from our Milwaukee and Chicago Business Units attended the course that was hosted by our Chicago Business Unit.  Congratulations to each of these graduates for achieving their Blue Belts and for preparing themselves to serve others.  Congratulations!

Our Blue Belt course is designed so that participants gain an understanding of the integrated Lean Six Sigma Methodology, the power of Lean Thinking in Action, structured problem solving approaches, and how Lean Six Sigma links with our company goals.  To become a Creation Technologies certified Lean Six Sigma Blue Belt, a person completes two or three of the following:

  • Attend an intensive 5-day Lean Six Sigma Blue Belt training course
  • Achieve a score of 80% or higher on a knowledge-based examination
  • Serve as a key member of a completed Lean Six Sigma project

The training is a blended approach of classroom instruction, hands-on exercises and interactive discussions.  Instructors leading this effort were our very own Continuous Improvement Coaches Phillip Miller, Jose Cerda, Melinda Wells and Richard “Dick” Miller.

Each of these industry experts are externally certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belts (we are blessed with 18 Black Belts and 27 Green Belts at Creation), and have extensive experience in Six Sigma techniques with leading-edge quality principles.  Lean Six Sigma drives home the importance of continuous improvement and our commitment to Our Pursuit of Excellence.

Lean Six Sigma is the union of two complimentary business management strategies: Lean and Six Sigma.  This combined approach focuses on creating more value with less work by removing waste in our systems and eliminating variation in our processes.  It provides a method to accelerate decision-making processes, while reducing production inefficiencies and increasing quality.  Capitalizing on these tools helps to ensure that Creation continues to deliver value-added services to our customers, with the right level of readiness, at the right cost to sustain and support future business.

I’d like to thank Michael Webster, Chris Young, Melinda Wells, Phillip Miller, Jose Cerda and Richard “Dick” Miller for making the vision of Lean Six Sigma Blue Belts a part of Creation’s promising future – well done!

I look forward to the next chapter in our Lean Six Sigma journey as, in the coming months, our deployment team leverages best practices and conducts a full deployment of our Lean Six Sigma training.

Are you a committed, curious, lifelong learner?

True that! My mom and dad used to say, “education has no end” to me almost every day and it has stuck like a glue…I’ve been learning ever since, and trying very hard to infect my kids (age 9-15) with this learning “disease.” And with the daily drumming of “lifelong learning” in the air at Creation, I can’t help it but hum and dance along…and my kids will get in the groove too, ha!
